The Traveling Tail brings you a collection of resources and personal stories from six-years of traveling internationally with my dog. Created by me, Caroline, and inspired by my dog Milo, I wanted to show that moving with a dog abroad is not as daunting as it seems. Here you’ll find a mix of transportation guidelines and travel materials complemented by tales of our adventures around the world. My hope is to inspire you to bring your dog if you move abroad.
About Me,
I’m Caroline, a dog lover and travel enthusiast. Originally from the United States, I have spent the last decade overseas studying and working in the field of international development. As a dual citizen of Spain I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Europe. It wasn’t until I spent 6 months studying in Paris that I fell in love with being abroad. Since then, I have been lucky enough to work and visit some of the most beautiful places in the world.
My travels become slightly more restricted when I fell in love with a puppy. While many tried to dissuade me from keeping him, I was convinced that I could give him a good life while still moving my career forward. Seven years later and we have moved between 3 US states, 4 countries and 2 continents. After 2 and a half years in South Africa and a year in my home state of New Hampshire, we have moved west and settled in Utah. I started The Traveling Tail to serve as the resource I had always wanted. To reassure those on the fence that bringing your dog abroad is indeed possible.
About Milo,
Milo is my 6-year old rescue dog. I found him as a street puppy when I was living in Tunisia. He was only a couple months old and was infested with fleas. After getting him cleaned up he became my little side-kick. I would take him to the cultural center where I worked to raise awareness about the problem of street dogs in Tunisia. Youth who were previously terrified of dogs wanted to take him for walks around the block.
Soon after I brought him back to the US with me and learned very quickly that his instincts were strong. Like a sight hound he will chase anything that moves, like a feral dog he will eat anything from the trash. While not the cuddly dog I had anticipated, he is the ultimate adventurer. He will follow you through any terrain from narrow caves through thorny bushes. After 2 years in South Africa living his best chasing monkeys out of the yard, he has returned to hunting chipmunks in New Hampshire.
While many think I named him after South Africa’s popular chocolate drink, Milo is named after the main character of my favorite childhood book, The Phantom Tollbooth.
About My Husband, Brett
While he doesn’t consider himself a contributor to this site, he actually plays a vital role. Any beautiful, high quality photo you see here or on any of The Traveling Tail’s social media has been taken by Brett. While his photography specializes in outdoor adventure and wildlife conservation, he has been kind enough to serve as Milo’s unofficial photographer. Brett also guides our family kayak adventures and takes the lead when Milo rumbles with wild animals. Check out his previous work with African Insight Academy and current work with At Your Leisure.
Happy Tails and Happy Travels!
