Reading While Stuck At Home During COVID-19
While many of us are stuck in our homes, a great way to pass the time is to pick up a book! This post has my top book recommendations for dog lovers.
Reading is a wonderful way to transport yourself to another time, place or universe. I love reading and I love dogs, therefore I put together a rather diverse list of books meant for all dog lovers to enjoy. So grab a blanket, cup of coffee, snuggle up to your dog and enjoy these book recommendations for dog lovers.
From Baghdad With Love – Jay Kopelman
This is a true story that takes place during the Iraq war in 2004. US Marines raid an abandoned building in the dangerous city of Fallujah. To their disbelief, they find a lone puppy left behind when everyone else in the city had left. This begins their journey of rescuing the puppy and the lessons he teaches the soldiers about life, death and love during war.
A Wolf Called Romeo – Nick Jans
The incredible true story of a black wolf that spent several years interacting with the people and dogs of Juneau, Alaska. Told from the perspective of the author, Nick Jans, he shares the unbelievable encounters he had with the wolf. A truly remarkable tale.
Merle’s Door – Ted Kerasote
Ted Kerasote is on a camping trip when he comes across a Labrador-mix who had been living on his own in the wild. The two form a bond and Ted decides to bring the dog home. Concerned that domestic living would lessen the dogs natural intelligence, he builds a door. This allows the dog, who he names Merle, to come and go as he pleases and is able to keep his wild spirit.
Together – Tom Sullivan
This tale follows the story of Brandon McCarthy, a man who lost his vision in a terrible mountain climbing accident. Just when he feels that all hope in life is lost he is given Nelson, a last chance seeing eye dog. Together they form a remarkable bond and find the beauty in life again.
Marley & Me – John Grogan
The lovable tale of a young couple who bring home the world’s naughtiest puppy. The couple fall in love with the little puppy who grows into an energetic, troublesome Labrador. He is so bad he even get’s expelled from obedience school. Through trial and tribulation Marley’s love for the couple is unconditional. A heart warming tribute to the dog that brought so much meaning into their lives.
Thunder Dog – Michael Hingson
Michael Hingson is a Sales Manager for a company located in the World Trade Center. When the building is attacked on September 11th, Hingson faces a challenge. He has been blind since childhood and must find a way out. It is up to his seeing eye dog Roselle to safely guide him down 78 floors. A remarkable tale of courage and trust.
A Three Dog Life – Abigail Thomas
Abigail Thomas is forced to rebuild her life after her husband suffers a serious brain injury and must live in an institution. To be closer to him she moves from the city to a small country town. In this process she adopts two more dogs to keep her company. A commentary on the feelings of guilt, discovering gratitude and learning to live in the present.
A Dog’s Purpose – Bruce Cameron
Told from the perspective of the dog, it’s the emotional tale of a dog’s many lives. In each life we are given the dog’s commentary on human relationships and the special bond that forms between humans and their dogs. This story showcases the power of unconditional love and the idea that in life every creature has a purpose.
Denali – Ben Moon
Outdoorsman Ben Moon instantly felt a connection when he comes across Denali at the shelter. Together they take to the road on a great adventure through the American West. Their adventures are put on hold when Ben is diagnosed with cancer. During his treatment Denali never leaves his side. Ben is able to return the favor when Denali is later diagnosed with the same disease. A powerful story showcasing the true meaning of friendship, love and loyalty.
The Call Of The Wild – Jack London
In this literary masterpiece, London tell’s us the story of Buck, a shepherd mix born into a nice life in California. In a twist of events Buck is kidnapped and sold as a sled dog in the freezing Yukon Territory. Even though Buck is passed along to different masters, he shows an unbreakable spirit. Truly a timeless classic.
